Finn had been watching the sky anxiously for so long he's beginning to get a crick in his neck. Literally all Poe had been supposed to do was a quick run around the system, carrying a scanner so they can evaluate how bad the solar flares from this system's sun really are, and come back. So even though today is Poe's free day after a fourteen-day-mission he returned from just yesterday, of course he took this flight as well. Crazy flyboy.
Except... Finn had been looking forward to having this day for themselves. Meaning him, Poe, a picnic blanket and a basket of snacks, snuggling on the lake shore and no X-Wings, no other pilots, no reports to fill for Poe and no exhausting Jedi training for Finn. Only problem? Poe's not here.
Finn sighs and tries to not be annoyed. And to not be disappointed. It's not Poe's fault he's so busy usually. Hopefully nothing happened to him though.
Before he can get caught up in his thoughts any more, there's finally a tiny ship showing up in the sky, rapidly getting bigger. And yes, that's definitely Black One descending.
She lands as perfectly as ever, and Finn takes off towards her before the tarmac is even all green. This time Poe is not getting away.
Finn's infuriating boyfriend manages to hop down from his fighter about three seconds before Finn takes him by the shoulders and kisses him, hard enough to make Poe stumble back. Poe's arms come up around him and he moans into the kiss.
"Did'ya miss me?"
Nova, if only Poe's stupid grin wasn't so pretty.
"You were supposed to be back an hour ago! What happened?"
Poe dips his head forward again and bites at Finn's lower lip, humming softly. "Blew a damn fuse on the scanner so I had to do some stuff again. BB-8's gonna debrief though, so." His eyes sparkle. "If you wanna steal me, take your shot."
Finn threads their hands together and grins. "Come on, hotshot."

soooo i have a friend and we're both writing novels, so the natural conclusion is that we could also write while we hang out together. makes sense, right?
except so far we haven't managed much writing during those hangouts at all :D it's really funny, we always have wayyyy too much to talk about to actually get to writing. and whenever we say we want to start writing now, we... still chat.
apart from that i'm doing pretty well, writing wise. I've got 2/3rds of sunrises done now; i'm just putting the finishing touches on the last bit of part two because i realised that there's something i can do there for some character development in the first chapter of part three. it's kind of annoying because i already sent my beta everything that's left of part two, but it does make a lot of sense for the character that it's about.
generally i really hope i can get sunrises done for the wip big bang and then hopefully let it lie around until november, where i'll look it all over and maybe start rewriting it. because while i will publish it for the wip bb and it will be beta'd, it'll still only really be the first draft. there's stuff i'll need to change and improve and characterisations that i'll need to work on and plot holes to fill, but i also need to see the finished product first to really know what needs doing. but at the same time i also need to have this damn story DONE. it's been dragging on for so long, and i don't want to have this one unfinished project forever. also just to prove to myself that i can actually write a full novel.
bc also... lbr, how hard can it be? every person who can more or less put words down on paper is doing it these days, and i'm not entirely stupid (unlike some people who actually publish books. man, the stuff i've read :DDDD)

what's also really cool is to have someone who doesn't have a fanfiction background to read sunrises. my friend doesn't read fanfiction and doesn't even know star trek discovery and she's still loving the story so far. which just really speaks for the story itself :3
plus talking about writing and worldbuilding with someone who doesn't have a fannish background is really interesting. especially world- and characterbuilding, since in fanfiction a lot of the characters aren't really *built* by the authors, and in canon fics the world isn't built at all. so hearing about how someone with such a completely different approach does it is really fascinating as well!
also, since she doesn't have a connection to the characters through who they are on discovery, it's interesting to see which of the characteristics i gave them she latches on to.

apparently my brain is bringing back the sam x bucky x steve thoughts, so lemme give y'all some hcs

them having breakfast together and sam and steve are all awake and already went on their morning run and bucky is a little gremlin who's still all soft in his pyjamas and they both come in and fluff his hair and bucky just gets kisses on both his cheeks and then sam is gonna cuddle him and tease him a little while steve makes breakfast and they both check out steve's ass and then laugh about it and then steve asks "what?" and they both grin and say "nothing" and steve has lots of very fond feelings bc there are the two men he loves most in the world snuggled on the couch
steve probably has to get a custom shower bc they all like showering together
bucky does Not like snuggling in bed, and he still has really really big problems with sleeping in a bed at all (hello 70 years of torture and brainwashing where he also did not have a bed) but he's literally got a nest of pillows etc on the floor, where he's pretty happy
also bucky absolutely does not drool when his hair gets petted. not at all
sam has four sisters so he considers himself an expert in braiding and bucky kind of does like the look of cornrows on him... but then that makes that side of his head get cold and nope
steve likes putting his hands under his boyfriends' shirts and make them squeal
sam often kisses his boyfriends' necks and rubs his beard against their skin to make them wiggle
sam likes neck rubs and steve has very skilled fingers
also it's bucky who's just a little bit shy about asking for kisses
sam teases both of his boys for getting hat hair in winter. bucky is then like "WELL i am the winter soldier i don't NEED HATS i'm not the hat soldier" and after half an hour outside he's.... a lil cold. luckily steve brought an emergency hat anyways
sam is from northern michigan, so he kinda laughs at the new yorkian winter, and then when they drive up to see his family bucky and steve end up having to push the car out of really deep snow a few times, bc sam's parents live pretty remotely on a farm. steve learns a LOT of recipes there bc sam had complained to his parents that yeah, his boyfriends are awesome, but one gets so scared by the toaster he doesn't like being in the kitchen, and the other one seasons food like he's a white suburban soccer mom
also sam gets to laugh his ass off when bucky finally teaches steve how to dance whatever dance they danced back in the day. and then sam teaches them proper dancing
bucky and steve maybe kinda had sort of vaccinations back in the day? bc steve's mom was a nurse and steve was already so super sick all the time so she hoped the vaccinations would help (in fact, it would've been better if steve could've relied on herd immunity bc he got VERY lucky not dying). but vaccinations were awful and scary bc the doses were massive. so when they come with sam when he's due for a shot of t, they both think of it as kind of a similar thing and they want to hold his hands bc again, vaccinations used to be really horrible, and sam is just like "???? but okay??" and his doctor thinks it's the sweetest thing ever
steve really likes drawing his boyfriends, of course, he's very bi and very in love, and ofc they both readily model for him, but he's especially fond of making just little sketches of them doing stuff? and he's Even More Fond of sketching them kissing. so sometimes bucky and sam will just be smooching and steve will make so many doodles of that and it's always really cute
the first time it just got really hot and sam had been... idk, maybe doing some physical activity and then he's just like FUCK IT and tosses his shirt away and bucky is just like oh. oh oh oh oh. oh my god. oh boy. oh god don't stare don't stare wanna stare oh god ahhhh
the only thing better than one of them being a little sweaty and having no shirt on is, in bucky's opinion, when said boyfriend will then come and grab him a little and kiss him
and obvs sam has had dated people before, and so he's generally more attuned to being physically close with men, and bucky and steve come from Ye Olden Times where homosexuality bad, and so sam is more easygoing about that whole thing while the other two still regard it as something really, really special that they maybe shouldn't do without permission, so sam has some fun shoving them around and getting them into positions where he can kiss them stupid
also steve absolutely offered one of them to "lick the spatula" when he was making one of their first sunday breakfast pancakes after they'd moved together. he honestly meant licking the pancake dough off the spatula, but both of his boyfriends happily misunderstood that and kept teasing him for WEEKS
also, bucky absolutely steals socks
sam and steve both keep a pretty military-style closet and general orderliness, and bucky is just A Mess and he swears that his boyfriends' socks are warmer
sam retaliates by stealing bucky's hoodies bc a) they smell of boyfriend and b) they're bigger than his bc bucky loves his clothing Big and Baggy so you can only tell he's a biped and not much more, which makes for very comfy clothing to steal

(please don't call me out about the vaccinations thing i did Not research that.) (also hmm maybe steve and bucky joke that it's an anti vaccination so sam catches a case of the beard, and then sam threatens that if they're not nice about his beard he'll shave it off and then they behave)

Summary:

It's the seventh month of the war with the Klingons on Alterra, and either because Captain Lorca is completely mad or the most daring man out there, he's taking his squadron all the way out to Isthmus, closer to the Klingon bases than any other squadron is stationed. And that means that Dr Hugh Culber has no chance but to pack up his medbay and come with.

Oh, and accept that he'll be followed everywhere he goes by 19-1026-71, his personal protection android that the captain insisted on. Never mind that 19-1026-71 isn't a fighter android, or that he very empathically doesn't want to be here and is being an asshole about it, or that he's... actually really cute.

Great. Hugh's life just got a lot, lot worse.

i'm really happy with how this series is progressing. it's slow, yeah, but i do have a whole hundred parts to fill, so eh. i'm also really enjoying exploring amelia and justin as secondary characters rather than the practically nonexistent characters they are in canon, and i do enjoy giving paul a best friend :>

i also took today off as a sort of mental health day - ordered pizza, showered, finished the last season of my show (and now i'm VERY thirsty for more but so far it's looking like i can't get it unless i have an american tv connection, which... well, that's difficult)... and i also accepted packages for ten (10) other people from my house. now the way either into the kitchen or into my bathroom is blocked, depending on how i stack them. oops.
i had originally planned to write much more today, but it'd be sunrises i'd need to write for, and i'm a little stuck. so... idk, i might brute force it later.
